BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has rolled out a wagon variant of its hybrid sedan, the Seal 06 DM-i, further expanding its popular Seal family product lineup.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant officially launched the Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition at an event today, with a starting price of RMB 109,800 ($15,320).
The regular Seal 06 DM-i hybrid sedan was launched on May 28, 2024, based on BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology, with an NEDC range of up to 2,100 kilometers.
The sedan is available in five variants, with starting prices of RMB 99,800, RMB 109,800, RMB 119,800, RMB 129,800, and RMB 139,800.
The Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition is available in three variants, with starting prices of RMB 109,800, RMB 119,800, and RMB 129,800.
The wagon variant measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,505 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,790 mm, slightly larger than the regular Seal 06 DM-i, which measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,790 mm.
The overall design of the Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition follows the style of the regular Seal 06 DM-i, but with a higher rear end, providing more storage space.
It is powered by a 1.5L gasoline engine with an output of 74 kW. It also features an electric motor with a peak power output of 120 kW or 160 kW. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 7.7 seconds.
The model is equipped with BYD’s blade battery, with the entry-level version offering a battery range of 80 kilometers and the other two versions offering 150 kilometers.
It can charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in 25 minutes and supports external power supply.
The Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition has a fuel consumption of 3.15 liters per 100 kilometers when the battery is depleted, and a range of up to 2,000 kilometers when fully fueled and charged.
The Seal originally started as an electric sedan but has since expanded into a family of multiple models.
The Seal 06 EV pure electric sedan, launched on June 7, is the latest addition to the Seal family.
Prior to the Seal 06 EV, the Seal family included the hybrid Seal 05 DM-i, the hybrid Seal 06 DM-i, the hybrid Seal 07 DM-i, the pure electric Seal 06 GT, and the pure electric Seal.
In China, wagon-type vehicles are a niche market, as local consumers prefer conventional sedans and SUVs (sport utility vehicles).
As such models from automakers including Zeekr (NYSE: ZK) and Nio (NYSE: NIO) have gained popularity in recent years, more automakers have joined the ranks of those launching such models.
For BYD, it has already launched several shooting brake-style models under its multiple brands, which can also be considered wagon models.
BYD sold 382,585 vehicles in June, marking a new high for the year, with a year-on-year increase of 11.98 percent and a month-on-month increase of 0.03 percent.
The Seal family sold 44,387 units in June, representing a year-on-year increase of 81.86 percent and a month-on-month increase of 73.47 percent.
In the first half of the year, the Seal family sold 202,601 units, up 152.54 percent year-on-year, contributing 9.44 percent of BYD Group’s sales during the same period, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
