The latest filing from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveals a wagon variant of the BYD Seal 06 family, a plug-in hybrid estate with extended electric driving range and optional lidar-based driver-assistance hardware.

Technical Overview

According to the regulatory filing, the model uses a plug-in hybrid system built around a naturally aspirated gasoline engine paired with an electric drive motor. The combustion engine is rated at 74 kW, while the electric unit delivers 175 kW of peak output. Energy storage is provided by a 34.275 kWh battery pack, enabling a 210 km WLTC pure-electric driving range. Battery chemistry and supplier information were not disclosed in the filing.

The document lists the vehicle as a new-energy passenger car equipped with plug-in hybrid propulsion. Details about the drivetrain layout were not specified, and the filing does not confirm whether the model uses front-wheel drive or another configuration. Driver-assistance hardware can include an optional roof-mounted lidar unit. The filing also lists multiple sensor configurations, including front and rear radar, cameras integrated into exterior mirrors, and a rear camera system.

Product Context

The wagon maintains the design language seen on the sedan variant of the Seal 06 family. The front fascia features slim headlights paired with BYD’s English lettering on the nose, while the lower bumper integrates an inverted trapezoidal intake opening with diamond-shaped vents on both sides. At the rear, the vehicle adopts a continuous light bar and a roof spoiler housing a high-mounted brake light. A rear camera is mounted near the spoiler assembly, and a rear window wiper is an optional feature.

Regulatory data shows the body measuring 4850 mm in length, 1890 mm in width, and 1505 mm in height, with a 2790 mm wheelbase. The filing also lists multiple wheel options ranging from sixteen to eighteen inches. Buyers will be able to select several exterior configurations, including panoramic roof options, alternative trim elements for the side windows, and different bumper finishes.

Market Positioning

BYD has not announced pricing for the updated wagon variant in the filing. For reference, the existing Seal 06 DM-i wagon launched earlier with prices starting at 109,800 yuan (15,230 USD) and reaching 129,800 yuan (18,115 USD) for higher trims.

The model expands the Seal 06 lineup into a body style that has recently attracted renewed attention in China’s new-energy vehicle market. Several manufacturers have introduced electric wagon or shooting-brake derivatives, including the Zeekr 007 GT estate and the updated Nio ET5 Touring, while additional projects such as Huawei-backed wagon models have also appeared in testing or early development.

Industry Context

BYD has steadily expanded the Seal series since its introduction as part of the brand’s Ocean lineup, adding new body styles and powertrain variations to cover additional market segments.

In China’s plug-in hybrid market, manufacturers have increasingly promoted larger battery packs that enable longer electric-only operation, a strategy designed to bridge the gap between traditional hybrids and full battery-electric vehicles.

Outlook

The MIIT filing confirms that BYD is preparing a wagon version of the Seal 06 with a plug-in hybrid system and extended electric capability. Further technical details such as battery chemistry, drivetrain layout, and pricing are expected to emerge closer to the model’s official launch.
