China loves ambition and BYD’s YangWang U8L has it in spades with size, strength and tech. This extended version of the YangWang U8 stretches the boundaries of what an electric SUV can be, combining massive power with a tech heavy interior and capabilities that are almost otherworldly. At around $181,000 it’s a premium product in China but it’s cheaper than Western luxury giants like the Bentley Bentayga or Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

At 14.6 inches longer than the standard model and 7.8 inches longer in wheelbase, the U8L dominates the road with its sheer scale. This isn’t just extra legroom, it’s about creating a flagship that feels imposing yet purposeful. The extra length enhances its stately proportions giving it road presence that rivals the biggest SUVs from Europe. Chinese buyers where domestic brands are gaining prestige will find the U8L’s size and styling a compelling alternative to pricier imports.

The U8L doesn’t just rely on brute strength, it’s packed with tech that sets it apart in the SUV market. The DiPilot 600 system, standard across all models, brings advanced autonomous driving capabilities with three LiDAR sensors. This setup enables Navigate on Autopilot, the U8L can handle highways and urban streets with minimal driver input. Carbon ceramic brakes provide stopping power to match the acceleration, the Disus-P hydraulic suspension ensures a smooth ride even on rough terrain. And the water-fording ability inherited from the standard U8 lets the SUV float and navigate through deep water – a feature few rivals can claim.

Despite its impressive specs the U8L enters a tough market. YangWang’s sales have fallen significantly compared to last year so will Chinese buyers take to this expensive domestic product? At 1,300,000 yuan it’s a big ask, even if it’s cheaper than Western rivals. But for those who value innovation, power and a Chinese take on luxury the U8L is a good package.
