BYD unveils new blade batteries and ultra-fast charging technology

BYD has unveiled a new generation of blade batteries and ultra-fast charging technology as it seeks to revive domestic electric vehicle (EV) sales.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Chinese EV maker unveiled upgraded battery cells and a flash-charging architecture at an event in Shenzhen, alongside refreshed and new models across its lineup.

BYD said the new technology can recharge batteries from 10% to 70% in five minutes and close to a full charge in around nine minutes.

The company added that charging speeds slow only marginally in extreme cold conditions.

According to the report, the automaker is prioritising solutions aimed at addressing driving range concerns rather than focusing on advanced software-driven features.

The upgrades come as BYD’s sales in China declined sharply. The company reported a 36% drop in sales during January and February compared with the same period a year earlier.

Despite the slowdown in its home market, the company continues to record strong export growth.

Overseas sales reached 106,000 vehicles last month, and BYD is targeting international sales of 1.3 million vehicles in 2026.

At the Shenzhen event, BYD also presented new models across its product portfolio, including vehicles in the Dynasty and Ocean mass-market series and luxury models under the Yangwang brand.

Among them is the Datang sport utility vehicle, which the company said can travel up to 950km on a single charge.

The new battery cells will initially be installed in ten models, while the company is also considering deploying the charging facilities overseas.

BYD added that it has redesigned charging piles to reduce their weight.

While the upgrades are intended to strengthen domestic performance, they are also expected to support international expansion, where limited charging infrastructure remains a key barrier to EV adoption.
