BYD reached a new monthly sales record in Germany for the second consecutive month in October, with figures surpassing 3,000 units again.
Data published by the KBA on Wednesday showed that the Chinese carmaker sold 3,353 vehicles in October, about 100 units above the September result.
October numbers represented a ninefold surge from just 347 units in the same month a year before.
Competitors
Between January 1 and October 31, BYD has registered 15,171 vehicles in Europe’s largest automotive market.
Tesla, on the other hand, saw its sales drop by half in the same period, from over 30,000 vehicles in the first ten months of 2024 to just 15,595 this year.
In October, the US brand saw its sales tumble to just 750 units, the lowest result in over three years.
It is worth noting, however, that while Tesla only sells pure electric vehicles, BYD‘s lineup includes both fully electric and hybrid models.
Tesla’s sales decline contrasts with the overall growth in EV adoption — fully electric vehicle (BEV) sales jumped 47.7% compared to last year.
In October, BEVs totaled 52,425 units, making up 21% of the auto market.
Geely-backed Polestar and Guangzhou-based XPeng saw registrations more than triple last month, at 562 and 359 vehicles, respectively.
Lineup in Germany
BYD’s lineup in Germany includes the smaller Dolphin Surf, launched in May. The compact model is the cheapest in the lineup, starting from €22,990 ($26,400).
The SUV portfolio includes the Atto 2, Atto 3, Sealion 7 and Seal U models, with the most expensive Tang — priced from €75,000 ($86,200) — also available.
All of these models are fully electric, including the Seal, which is the only BYD sedan in the country.
The brand also features two plug-in hybrids in the market — the Seal U DM-i SUV and the recently launched Seal 6 Dm-i Touring station wagon.
Yangwang Nürburgring Record
Last month, the BYD’s sub-brand Yangwang beat a performance record time in the iconic Nürburgring racetrack, with its U9X supercar completing the lap in just 6 minutes, 59.157 seconds.
The test was performed ahead of the brand’s expansion to the continent, which was announced in July, although no specific timeline was revealed.
BYD’s Yangwang becomes the first Chinese automaker to enter the top-tier luxury segment in the continent.
The sub-brand will compete with European brands such as Ferrari and Lamborghini.
According to Executive VP Stella Li, BYD‘s Denza will also be available in the Old Continent “early next year”.
