Xiaomi officials responded to the recent SU7 electric sedan fire in China. This case became widely discussed online because of the firework-like explosions accompanying the flame.

The Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan caught fire in Yingkou, Liaoning Province. It is a region in the north of China. The ignition case sparkled discussion about the cause of the fire and the firework-like explosion effects.

According to an official statement shared by Xiaomi Auto, the fire initially broke out at the Xiaomi SU7’s driver’s seat on February 1. It was confirmed by the vehicle owner that the accident was caused by a residual fire source inside the vehicle, igniting nearby flammable materials. The exact fire source remained undisclosed. However, it was clarified that the car’s battery wasn’t the cause of the fire.

Xiaomi officials clarified that the so-called firework explosions were caused by the airbags deploying. So, these concerning sounds have nothing to do with a battery. According to Xiaomi, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and ensured no one was injured.

It is worth noting that most of the recent EV fires in China were caused by some flammable objects left inside the car. For example, the Avatr 06 sedan caught fire on October 5 last year in Fujian Province due to concentrating light on the passenger car seat, caused by accessories on the center console. On October 30, the Geely EX2 (Xingyuan) hatchback also ignited due to a flammable source in the cabin.

Quickly about Xiaomi SU7

The Xiaomi SU7 is one of the most popular Chinese cars domestically, with 258,164 units delivered last year, according to China EV DataTracker. It was also reported to be one of the most favorite Chinese electric cars of the Ford CEO Jim Farley.
