Tesla’s new Model Y L may never come to the US despite its release in China

Tesla boss Elon Musk has said the Model Y L, which recently launched in China, ‘might not ever’ come to the American market.

Tesla officially launched the Model Y L in China this week with a starting price of around $47,000.

The EV is a larger version of the Model Y and comes with six seats.

However, Musk has now warned that Tesla might never bring the new model to the US.

Elon Musk has said the Tesla Model Y L ‘might not’ be sold in the US

The new six-seater Tesla Model Y L features three rows and is a little longer than the standard Model Y.

The EV offers around 466 miles (751km) of range, and has a top speed of 125mph (201km).

However, any American motorists hoping to get their hands on one could be set for disappointment.

In an exchange on X, Elon Musk said the car ‘might not’ come to the US at all.

Musk responded to a comment from someone questioning why Tesla hadn’t announced the launch of the Model Y L in the US.

“This variant of the Model Y doesn’t start production in the US until the end of next year,” he wrote

“Might not ever, given the advent of self-driving in America.”

From his comments, it seems as though Musk believes autonomous driving would make the Model Y L obsolete in the States.

Nonetheless, it seems some US motorists were left disappointed by the comments.

“Ah that’s a bummer, it looks so cool,” one wrote.

“Wouldn’t people with a lot of kids still want a 3-row SUV even with self-driving?”

“Devastating news,” another commented. “We were ready to order!”

“Super sad to hear this,” a third said. “Y L was the car that I’m most interested in buying.”

The new looks to be a big hit in China

Orders for the new Model Y L officially opened in China this week, and it reportedly raked in almost 40,000 orders on its first day.

The EV has a starting price of 339,000 yuan, around $47,184.

Deliveries of the Model Y L are expected to start in September.
