Tesla’s new China move is a fresh spin on its super popular Model Y, a car you see everywhere from city streets to highways. The Model Y L extends the original design to fit six seats, with more space and a few surprises. Launching in China this fall, it’s to meet the demand for larger family cars in a super competitive market.
At 4,976 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,668 mm tall, the Model Y L is visibly bigger than the five-seat version. It’s about 7 inches longer, with a 6 inch longer wheelbase at 3,040 mm. That extra length isn’t just for show – it’s for a third row, making Tesla’s first six-seat Model Y in China. Unlike the earlier seven-seat version which crammed extra seats into the standard wheelbase, this one focuses on comfort with individual middle row seats.

Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, one notch above the standard Model Y. While exact specs are still under wraps, filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology suggest a power bump over the base model. The goal here is to blend performance with practicality, so the SUV can handle city traffic and open roads with ease.
The interior gets a smart overhaul. New seats are tailored to the extended layout, with individual middle row seats instead of a bench, making third row access smoother. A new light gold exterior paint adds some style, with redesigned wheels and a rear spoiler that keeps Tesla’s sleek look while adapting to the longer body. The rear, especially behind the C-pillar, has been reshaped to fit the extended frame, giving the Model Y L a unique silhouette.
China is the main stage for this launch, with production likely to be at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. The timing is deliberate – China’s EV market is intense, with local players like BYD selling over 2.1 million vehicles in the first half of 2025, far outpacing Tesla’s 721,000 global deliveries. By offering a bigger Model Y, Tesla is targeting families and fleet buyers who need more seats without splurging on the pricier Model X.
A US release is expected but not confirmed, so we’ll have to wait and see about the global rollout. Price TBA but Tesla’s track record says it will be competitive. The standard Model Y is already the top selling EV in the US with 86,120 units sold in Q2 2025 and a bigger version will attract buyers who have outgrown the five-seater but not ready to splurge on the Model X.
