Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) today saw the rollout of its 9 millionth electric vehicle (EV) globally at its Shanghai factory, marking another milestone for its largest global manufacturing facility.
The milestone vehicle is a Model Y, the world’s best-selling model, Tesla said.
Model Y was the global passenger vehicle sales champion in 2023 according to JATO Dynamics data, and remained the global passenger vehicle sales champion in 2024 based on Statista data, the company noted.
Construction of Tesla’s Shanghai factory commenced on January 7, 2019, and it began operations by the end of 2019, marking the first wholly foreign-owned automobile manufacturing project in China.
Giga Shanghai began delivering Model 3 sedans to local consumers in January 2020 and started Model Y deliveries in January 2021.
On August 13, 2022, the factory saw its one-millionth locally produced vehicle roll off the line.
On September 6, 2023, Tesla’s Shanghai factory reached the milestone of its two-millionth locally produced vehicle, less than four years after operations commenced.
The milestones of the three millionth and four millionth vehicles produced at Giga Shanghai were reached on October 11, 2024, and December 8, 2025, respectively.
With an annual production capacity exceeding 1 million vehicles, the factory is Tesla’s largest globally. It not only supplies vehicles to Chinese customers but also serves as an export hub for the US EV maker.
From January to November this year, Tesla China’s wholesale sales — including vehicles sold domestically and exported — totaled 754,561 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Notably, Tesla’s retail sales in China have shown weakness this year, with November figures at 73,145 units, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decline.
From January to November, Tesla’s retail sales in China totaled 531,855 units, down 7.37 percent year-on-year.
