Elon Musk’s Tesla has officially entered India’s electric vehicle market with the first showroom opening today in Mumbai’s BKC complex. Tesla has launched its Model Y electric SUV at a starting price of Rs 60 lakh, the company revealed on its website on Tuesday. According to Tesla’s India price list, the Model Y rear-wheel drive is priced at Rs 60 lakh, while the long-range variant costs Rs 68 lakh. These rates are considerably steeper than in the US, where the Model Y starts at $44,990 (around Rs 37.5 lakh), and even higher compared to China (¥263,500 or Rs 29.9 lakh) and Germany (€45,970 or Rs 45.6 lakh).

China vs US vs India: How Does The Tesla Model Y Compare?

When it comes to pricing, the Tesla Model Y shows a stark contrast across key markets. In China, one of Tesla’s largest markets, the Model Y starts at around Rs 29.9 lakh, making it the most affordable. In the US, the base variant is priced at approximately Rs 37.5 lakh. But in India, where Tesla is making its long-awaited debut, the same Model Y starts at a steep Rs 60 lakh — nearly double the China price. This pricing disparity highlights the cost challenges Tesla faces in India, largely due to high import duties and a lack of local manufacturing.

Features of Tesla Model Y

According to the company’s website, Model Y will be introduced in two versions, including Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive. The Rear-Wheel Drive will offer a 500 km range and will be able to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 59 seconds. The Long Range Rear-Wheel will offer a range of 622 km and will go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Both models will include 9 speakers, a 15.4-inch front-row touch screen and second-generation suspension noise reduction hardware.
