Tesla announces longer, three-row Model Y L 'coming soon' to China
  • Tesla teased a revamped, longer Model Y for its Chinese lineup.
  • In the video released by Tesla, several notable features stand out.
  • The car will be available first in the Chinese market.

Tesla has officially announced a new Model Y with three rows of seating, and it’s «coming soon.»

On Weibo, a Chinese social media site, the electric vehicle giant teased the upcoming Model Y L — an elongated, three-row version of the brand’s popular SUV. The Model Y L will come with a longer wheelbase and three rows of seating, catering to a growing market demand for three-row SUVs.

Along with extra space for seating or cargo, the newly announced Model Y L appears to feature some new designs and features for a Tesla vehicle.

What’s new in the Model Y L?

Beyond a larger wheelbase and more room in the backseats, the teaser video shows some changes to the interior of the vehicle, including extra ventilation flowing to the back rows and retractable armrests protruding from the base of the seats.

On the outside, the teaser video indicates the Model Y L will have new badging on the back of the vehicle, a spoiler on the back and redesigned wheels.

Will the Model Y L be available in the US?

In July, Tesla registered plans to bring the Model Y L to the Chinese market. Those filings indicated the vehicle will have a 120-inch wheelbase and three rows of seating. After filing the announcement, Tesla said, «Model Y L, see you in the fall,» on its Weibo account.

Tesla has not yet announced plans to bring the longer Model Y to the American market.

The Model Y L comes as Tesla is competing to carve out a foothold in the Chinese auto market, going against EV giants like Xiaomi and BYD.

While it seems the Model Y L will launch in the third or fourth quarter in China, a longer, more spacious Model Y might perform well in the American market. In May of 2025, Tesla released a cheaper, refreshed version of the Model Y — though still the same size as previous model years — with several affordable trim levels.

A popular and profitable vehicle in the American market would do well for an automaker like Tesla, which has struggled U.S. sales in 2025, in part, due to CEO Elon Musk’s close association with President Donald Trump.
