YANGWANG U9 Track Edition sets 294mph record to become fastest EV in the world

Demand for EVs has been in decline globally for over a year, and hybrids may be eating into sales; however, electric cars continue to push the boundaries

Papenburg, Germany -- YANGWANG, BYD’s high-end sub-brand, has set a new global electric vehicle (EV) top-speed record of 472.41 km/h at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg test track in Germany. The feat was achieved with YANGWANG’s latest U9 Track Edition supercar on 8 August 2025, making it the world’s fastest EV.

Yangwang, the luxury sub-brand of Chinese automaker BYD, has set a new global speed record for electric vehicles after its U9 Track Edition supercar reached 472.41 km/h (293.6 mph).

The Yangwang U9's new top speed surpasses its previous record of 391.94 km/h achieved last October.

BYD, best known for affordable mass-market EVs, is now pushing into luxury territory with models priced above $200,000.
