BYD Reaches 15 Million Plugin Vehicles In Crazy Time

Support CleanTechnica's work through a Substack subscription or on Stripe. In November 2024, BYD reached cumulative production of 10 million plugin vehicles (or “new energy vehicles” as they are called in China). Just 13 months later, in December 2025, the company reached 15 million. That’s stunning growth. From 10 million ... [continued]
BYD Rises in Europe as Tesla Falls, More Than Tripling Sales

As Zach mentioned yesterday, the Guardian reported data from ACEA showing that Tesla sold 12,130 vehicles in Europe in November, down from 18,430 last year, while the overall market grew slightly. Tesla’s market share shrank from 2.1% to 1.4%. However, while Tesla staggered, BYD’s sales growth accelerated in the EU, EFTA and UK from 6,568 to 21,133 units in November over the year prior. Up 221%. More growth than any other automaker. It should be noted that this YoY growth came after the EU implemented supplemental BEV tariffs on top of the 10% base tariff, bringing the total to 27% for BYD. Politicians who thought that the tariffs might stop them are undoubtedly disappointed. BYD indicated that they had padded prices ahead of the tariffs in anticipation of their implementation and that they would not need to raise prices after the tariffs were announced. As such, the tariffs did not slow them down. While protectionism and the threat of protectionism undoubtedly inflate European prices overall, greater certainty lets companies like BYD build out viable business models. Their vehicles are still more than competitive, even when prices are inflated by politicians. However, because the added tariffs do not apply to PHEVs, those models have been growing faster. This is driving faster PHEV growth in 2025.

BYD Significantly Improves Range & Efficiency with OTA Updates

While much of the news this week has been discouraging, recent reports about BYD’s OTA updates have provided something positive to think about. In particular, the OTA updates have focused on BYD’s DM-i 5.0 (5th generation PHEV platform), which started rolling out across models in China last year. Consumers in China are getting more battery-only range and better fuel economy once the battery is depleted than when they bought their vehicles. While some news has been worse than expected, it is good to see something ending up better than expected. That is not only better for consumers, but also better for the CO2 emissions and the environment.

You Can’t Buy This, America: BYD T4 EV Truck for Hauling

In the US, the Ford F150 has been the best-selling truck for 48 consecutive years and the best-selling vehicle overall for the past 43 years. Americans love their trucks. Much of that love has little to do with actually carrying cargo in the bed. However, with ongoing construction on my street, I am reminded that some truck users prioritize function. Looking through materials for BYD’s new T4, it raised a question: What if you actually needed a truck to carry stuff? Overall, the BYD T4 has a GVWR of 3.495 metric tons or 7705 lbs., which would technically make it a Class 2 Truck in the US. Being Class 2 would make certification easier, as the regulations are different than for passenger vehicles (even though many Class 2 trucks, like the F250, are used as passenger vehicles). Payload comes in at 1545 kg for the flatbed (3406 lbs.), which is roughly 50% more in comparison to the most capable F150 and twice as much as the most popular model. The bed of the T4 is over 13 feet long overall and over 12.6 feet long inside with the sides folded up. That bed is also over 50% longer than the 8’ bed F150 and over twice as long as the most popular version, while the T4 is shorter overall. And, because it is a flatbed, the bed width is not restricted by wheel wells, making the bed floor ~50%. At over 6’ wide, wider than the most popular F150 truck bed is long. A 15 cubic meter cargo box is also available, which is in line with the largest Jumbo/Extended Frame high-roof version of the Transit van, but in a much smaller footprint.
