Leading Chinese electric vehicle maker says latest models can charge up as fast as filling a petrol tank

Electric vehicle giant BYD unveiled a new charging system in China on Monday, intensifying already fierce competition in the world’s largest auto market and propelling it further ahead of rivals such as Tesla.

Chinese automaking juggernaut BYD Co. is taking things to even greater heights, now staking claim to a system it says will make it as quick to charge an electric vehicle as to refuel a gasoline car.

BYD unveiled a new battery and charging system that can charge almost as fast as it takes to refuel a regular car. Tesla's Chinese rival will start selling vehicles with the new technology next month. The stock climbed as much as 6% at the open of trading in Hong Kong Tuesday, lifting its market value to almost $162 billion — more than Ford Motor, General Motors and Volkswagen combined. Shares in Chinese EV giant BYD surged to a record high Tuesday after it unveiled new battery technology it says can charge a vehicle in the same time it takes to fill up a petrol car. "Our pursuit is to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refuelling time of fuel vehicles," he said at Monday evening's launch.
