Europe's top car manufacturer Volkswagen presented a series of more affordable electric vehicles Monday as Chinese EV titan BYD said it would start producing a cut-price model on the continent. With starting prices of around 25,000 euros ($29,000), lower than many current EVs made by European manufacturers, their commercial launch is set for next year.

BYD will start Hungary production by end-2025, aiming for full European local manufacturing within three years while expanding plug-in hybrid offerings.

With many auto companies concerned over Europe's tough-to-meet carbon emissions targets for 2035, several firm said they would widen their production focus rather than restrict themselves to electric or other alternative-fuel vehicles. European automakers at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, running until Friday, also face sinking sales in China, the biggest single market for Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
