BYD (BYDDY) stock fell 5% in September as Japan EV sales disappoint and Berkshire Hathaway exits its 15-year stake, raising investor concerns.

While discounting helped make BYD the most popular EV brand in China, the tactic could backfire in Japan.

The company is also preparing to start production at its new Hungary plant early next year as part of its broader international expansion.

The analyst noted that the company’s slow growth highlights the loyalty of Japanese buyers to domestic brands and hybrids.

BYD is now turning to discounts — a practice that’s put it front and center of an industry crackdown in China — to try and boost sales.

BYD has recently started a price battle in Japan to attract customers with a discount offer.

BYD has confirmed that Berkshire Hathaway completely sold off its remaining shares earlier this year, ending a 17-year run that began in 2008.

As it confirmed Berkshire has sold the last of its shares, the Chinese EV maker thanked Buffett and Munger for their 17-year investment.
