BYD ATTO 1 & ATTO 2 Bring EV Price Parity to Australia!

BYD ATTO 1 & ATTO 2 Bring EV Price Parity to...

BYD recently launched the Atto 1 (aka, Seagull/Dolphin Surf/Dolphin Mini) in Australia, starting at $23,990 AUD ($15,661 USD). This makes is the least expensive EV in Australia. Of note, that does not include on the road cost, but it prices the car between the Suzuki Swift and Toyota Yaris when the taxes are added in.In addition, BYD also launched the Atto 2 (aka, Yuan Up/Yuan Pro), at a starting price of $31,990 AUD ($20,884 USD). The price of this small SUV also falls between the Suzuki Fronx and Toyota Yaris Cross for drive away price.Image Credit: BYDOverall, the BYD cars are a little larger and seem to be better equipped. Legacy ICE vehicles no longer have a price advantage in Australia. I would expect BYD to follow similar pricing strategy on their upcoming product launches. And I expect other companies to follow their lead.EVs being priced at parity with comparable gasoline vehicles has significant implications. The price justification for buying an ICE car goes away. Not just for overall cost of ownership, but also for up-front cost.  People can make purchase decisions based on what fits their needs and preferences, not just their budgets.

BYD’s 2026 Model Refreshes Raise the Question: Better NEV Value or Universal Advanced ADAS?

BYD’s 2026 Model Refreshes Raise the Question: Better NEV Value or...

BYD recently launched refreshes of its DM-I models for 2026. Most recently the Qin L, Song L, and Song Pro. Typically, BYD refreshes models in 1Q when sales are seasonably depressed in China. However, BYD has essentially refreshed its entire DM-I lineup out of cycle. This will let every model qualify for the revised 5% purchase tax exemption next year. It also means entry level models have moved up from roughly equivalent range of a Chevy Volt to approximately a first generation LEAF (~133 km). Meanwhile, their more premium models have increased to 200-250 km of EV-only range. Beyond the EV-range, these models use the electric motor as the primary means of propulsion. That already made them superior to ICE-centric PHEV’s that engage the engine regularly for moderate acceleration or highway operation, regardless of range rating. The new models now have enough range to cover daily driving on battery power alone, typically not needing to be charged daily. This added EV capability tends to come with upgraded interiors and additional features. BYD’s active dampening DiSus-C suspension is now standard on more models. The Song L DM-I was also updated with semi-hidden door handles, ahead of the anticipated ban on pop-out door handles in China. Features like HUD, heated/ventilated/massaging seats and onboard refrigerators come standard on more trim levels. Looking through the spec sheets on the BYD’s Chinese website, the cars have significantly improved while prices have stayed largely the same… but intelligent driving was dropped from some models.

How buy-European rules can help save Europe’s car industry

Europe's car industry faces an acute demand shock from Chinese overcapacity & US tariffs. Instead of bailouts & regulatory rollbacks, member-states should co-ordinate buy-European EV subsidies & revive internal demand.
