Organizers say that 117 new models are making their debut at Auto China 2024, which runs through May 4. Xiaomi announced that it had received more than 75,000 orders in the four weeks since the launch of its first car, the SU7, with a list price of 215,900 to 299,900 yuan ($29,800-$41,400).

The last thing China needs is more electric cars crowding a market, driving down prices at the expense of profit. Exporting that overcapacity, however, has brought EV makers to authorities' attention.

Some 117 new models were unveiled – out of 278 new energy vehicles on display. It comes as EVs now account for half of all car sales in China.

Automakers are set to unveil 117 new models versus 93 at last year's show in Shanghai，while overall 278 new energy vehicles (NEVs) will go on display, seven more than last year, organisers said. The show, which runs through early next month, comes as NEV sales hit a milestone in early April, accounting for over 50% of cars sold in China, auto association data showed.
