Brazilian officials say conditions were ‘extremely degrading’ at construction site for Chinese carmaker

More than 160 Chinese nationals working to build a factory for Chinese EV giant BYD are victims of human trafficking, according to Brazilian labour authorities.

RIO DE JANEIRO/SHANGHAI (Reuters) -Chinese workers at a construction site in Brazil for a factory owned by China's electric vehicle producer BYD are victims of human trafficking, Brazilian labor authorities said on Thursday in a growing controversy in BYD's biggest overseas market. BYD and contractor Jinjiang Group have agreed to assist and house the 163 workers in hotels until a deal to end their contracts is reached, Brazil's Labor Prosecutor's Office said in a statement issued after meeting representatives from both firms. BYD and Jinjiang did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is offering discounts until Jan. 26 on two of its hybrid and EV models, according to its website. Both Song Pro DM-i and Qin Plus EV are now priced from 99,800 yuan ($13,673), down 11.5% and 9.1% respectively from their previous sticker prices. ($1 = 7.2990 Chinese yuan)
