BYD Co.’s sales barely grew last month, raising doubts about whether the Chinese electric-vehicle maker will meet its annual target.

BEIJING (Reuters) -BYD's vehicle production fell 0.9% in July from a year earlier, ending a 16-month growth streak that has catapulted the Chinese automaker into the world's largest electric vehicle maker. BYD made 317,892 EVs and plug-in hybrids globally last month, down 0.9% in its first decline in more than a year, while sales edged up 0.6% to 344,296 vehicles, slowing sharply from a 12% increase in June, according to a monthly filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange. With electric car sales accounting for 41% of its more than 4 million vehicle sales last year, BYD has overtaken the U.S. EV specialist as the world's top EV seller.

BYD sold 344,296 NEVs in July, roughly on par with the same period last year, as PHEV sales declined sequentially for the fourth consecutive month.

Chinese EV companies captured 10.6% of Europe's EV market share in June despite EU tariffs. BYD and Xpeng saw significant sales growth.

BYD has taken a commanding lead over Tesla in the global battery electric vehicle (BEV) market, reporting over 1.02 million units sold in the first half of 2025 — more than 30% ahead of Tesla's 721,000. The figures confirm BYD's position as the world's top EV maker by volume, signaling a larger shift in global automotive leadership.
