China's electric vehicle giant BYD on Monday signed an agreement with Turkey to open a plant in the country in a move that would help it dodge new EU tariffs.

Turkish officials anticipate an agreement with Chinese EV and battery maker BYD to build a $1bn plant near Izmir in the west of the country, Automotive News Europe reports.

The new factory will provide BYD with improved access to the European Union due to Turkey’s customs-union agreement with the bloc. This development comes as the EU plans to impose provisional tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China
