As BYD cuts the prices of its EVs in China, other manufacturers suffered in March. José Pontes, data director at EV Volumes, looks at the impact on registrations.

Chinese EV maker BYD will showcase its premium brand's first sedan at the Beijing auto show from Thursday, in a challenge to the likes of Germany's Mercedes-Benz which three years ago pulled out of the brand's development citing slow sales. The Denza Z9GT is the fruit of BYD founder Wang Chuanfu persisting with the brand after Mercedes-Benz effectively became a sleeping partner in their decade-old 50-50 premium EV venture by cutting its stake to 10%. The car will complement Denza's N7 and N8 SUVs and D9 multipurpose vehicle, whose surging sales have contributed to BYD's EV domination at the expense of legacy foreign automakers.

BYD announced rolling out 6 million cars in November 2023, and now the brand has swiftly produced another 1 million cars in just over three months.

BYD currently has three electric vehicles in India. There is Seal, Atto 3 and e6.

BYD, the world's biggest new energy vehicle (NEV) company, produced its seven millionth NEV car on March 25, becoming the first company to cross the milestone. The target was achieved less than fourth months after the company heralded its six millionth NEV on November 26, 2023. A Denza N7 model produced at the company's Jinan factory in China was dubbed the milestone vehicle.
