On December 15th, Smart announced that its brand-new all-electric Smart #2 hatchback, based on its new ECA (Electric Compact Architecture) platform, has begun road testing globally. The new car is the successor to the Smart ForTwo and its official launch is expected to be at the end of 2026.
According to the official introduction, the Smart #2 is planned to be manufactured in China and will be exported to the overseas markets.
Last July, Dirk Adelmann, president of Smart Europe, revealed that Smart planned to revamp the ForTwo series and would begin production of a new electric version within months, primarily targeting the European market. However, the plan was contingent on “ensuring the model would be profitable.”
Then as early as October 2023, Tong Xiangbei, CEO of Smart Global, revealed that they were already developing a two-seater all-electric model, which might be named Smart #2.

Based on current photos of the testing vehicle, the Smart #2 is expected to continue the classic small car characteristics of the ForTwo model. In addition to retaining the compact size, the new car will also inherit the ForTwo’s two-door, two-seat layout, rear-wheel-drive, and four-wheel-at-the-corners design.
The Smart #2 is also expected to feature a completely new interior and utilize a battery pack with a capacity of approximately 30 kWh, according to Chinese news outlet Autohome.

The smart ForTwo two-door microcar was first introduced in 1998, a joint creation of Swatch and Mercedes-Benz, and sold over 2 million units worldwide. However, no updated versions of this car have been released in the Chinese market since 2020.
As part of Smart’s transition to shift to electric vehicles, Smart has launched the Smart #5 EHD plug-in hybrid SUV and recently applied for the Chinese sales license for its Smart #6 EHD plug-in hybrid sedan. And now, the Smart #2 is also part of this shift.
