PowerCell and Bosch scale fuel cell push in China

PowerCell Group is intensifying its strategic partnership with Robert Bosch GmbH to accelerate the rollout of hydrogen fuel cell systems in China. The move expands an existing collaboration and focuses sharply on high-growth mobility and industrial markets.

A centrepiece of the agreement is Bosch’s acquisition of additional intellectual property rights to PowerCell’s S3 fuel cell stack. Bosh has been producing these stacks at its facilities and Germany since 2023, delivering the finished 100 kW stacks to PowerCell’s plant in Gothenburg.

That was after the companies had started working on the development, production and marketing of a stack for the automotive sector based on the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEM) in 2019. Under the development and license agreement concluded at the time, Bosch secured the right to offer the new version of the S3 fuel cell stacks exclusively in cars, trucks and buses.

The newly signed €6 million deal enables Bosch to further localise and adapt the technology for China’s automotive sector, where demand for high-performance hydrogen solutions is rapidly increasing. Bosch, which already produces the stacks at its own sites, will continue delivering 100 kW systems to PowerCell’s Gothenburg facility.

Financial results for PowerCell from the new agreement will be reflected in its Q2 2025 report.

With the new deal, the partners also see strong potential beyond the automotive sector. Under the new framework, Bosch gains access to selected Chinese customers in construction machinery, industrial mobility and backup power—segments undergoing fast electrification where system robustness is critical.

“We are happy to continue to build on this very strong industrial collaboration,” says Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Group. “This agreement reinforces the collaboration and with our combined expertise, we excel at bridging the gap between technological platforms and customer reality, making fuel cells work in sectors where performance and reliability are non-negotiable. Together with Bosch, we scale faster, smarter, and more sustainably.”
