China’s electric vehicle scene is a bumpy ride, where cutting-edge tech and wallet-friendly prices slug it out. That said, a new contender as entered the ring, the Xpeng G7, a mid-size electric SUV with a starting price of $27,325, ready to take a swing at the Tesla Model Y’s throne.
It slides in about $9,448 cheaper than the Model Y, which kicks off at ¥263,500 ($36,773), a gap that hits hard in a market where bang-for-your-buck rules. Xpeng’s game plan is packing premium features into a more affordable package, and it’s already a hit—10,000 pre-orders poured in within nine minutes. For buyers chasing high-tech vibes without the hefty price tag, the G7’s value is tough to ignore.

The G7’s rear-mounted electric motor pumps out 292 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, zipping from 0 to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 126 mph. It keeps pace with the Model Y’s base model acceleration, but its range is the real star. With an 80.8 kWh LFP battery from CALB, it stretches up to 702 km (436 miles) on China’s CLTC standard, edging out the Model Y’s 688 km Long Range version. Even with 20-inch wheels, it still hits a solid 677 km, making it a trusty pick for long road trips.
Charging is where the G7 flexes. Its 800V setup and 5C ultra-fast charging can juice it from 10% to 80% in under 12 minutes, adding 436 km of range in just 10 minutes. The Model Y leans on Tesla’s Supercharger network, which maxes out at 250 kW, but it can’t match the G7’s blazing 451 kW DC fast-charging speed. In a country where charging stations are popping up everywhere, the G7’s quick pit stops are a win for city commuters and rural road-trippers alike.
Tech is the G7’s show-off moment. Xpeng calls it the “world’s first AI car with L3 computing power,” and it backs that up with up to three in-house Turing AI chips cranking out over 2,200 TOPS. That blows the Model Y’s AI4 chip out of the water, paving the way for Level 3 self-driving features via an OTA update by December 2025. Its vision-based XNGP system, with 11 cameras and three mm-wave radars, skips LiDAR for a budget-friendly yet sharp setup, handling adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and emergency braking up to 81 mph. Inside, the G7 feels like a high-tech lounge. A 15.6-inch floating touchscreen, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip, anchors a clean, minimalist cabin, paired with an 87-inch augmented reality head-up display from Huawei that beams navigation and driving info in vivid detail. The Model Y’s 15-inch screen is cool, but it can’t match the G7’s AR flair or its bonus 8-inch rear passenger display. With 39 storage spots, a 20-speaker 7.1.4 sound system, and four heated, ventilated, massaging seats, it’s like a spa on wheels. Its 819-liter trunk expands to 2,277 liters, beating the Model Y’s 2,158 liters, plus a 120-liter under-floor nook and 42-liter frunk for extra versatility.
The design nails it with Xpeng’s “X Face” look, rocking a full-width light bar and sleek “Star Ring” taillights for a modern edge. At 4,892 mm long, it’s a touch bigger than the Model Y, with 48.3% more front headroom and 33 mm more shoulder space. The Model Y’s minimalist style has global fans, but the G7’s six color options and Taichi AI Chassis, which tweaks suspension in 200 ms for a smoother ride than a Mercedes-Benz GLE, cater to Chinese drivers craving comfort and personalization.
China’s electric vehicle world is a full-on frenzy, with BYD, Xiaomi, and Zeekr hot on Tesla’s tail. Xpeng’s been on fire, with sales soaring 293% year-over-year in the first five months of 2025, racking up 162,578 vehicles sold. The G7 rides the wave of Xpeng’s Mona M03 and P7+ successes. However, the Model Y’s worldwide popularity and trusty ecosystem make it a go-to for folks craving something familiar.
