In the first half of 2025, CATL (SHE: 300750) and BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) continued to dominate the global electric vehicle (EV) battery market.

Global EV battery installations totaled 504.4 GWh in January-June, up 37.3 percent from 367.4 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released today by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

CATL’s EV battery installations came in at 190.9 GWh in January-June, up 37.9 percent from 138.5 GWh in the same period last year.

The Chinese battery giant maintained its position as the world’s top supplier with a 37.9 percent market share in January-June, remaining the only battery supplier with a market share exceeding 30 percent.

This was higher than its 37.7 percent share in January-June 2024 but slightly lower than its 38.1 percent share in January-May 2025.

BYD’s EV battery shipments in January-June reached 89.9 GWh, up 58.4 percent from 56.7 GWh in the same period last year.

The company ranked second with a 17.8 percent share in January-June, up from 15.4 percent in January-June 2024 and 17.4 percent in January-May 2025.

LG Energy Solution’s power battery installations in January-June were 47.2 GWh, up 4.4 percent year-on-year.

The South Korean company continued to rank third with a 9.4 percent share in January-June, down from 12.3 percent in the same period last year and also down from 10.0 percent in January-May 2025.

China’s CALB ranked fourth with a 4.3 percent share, while South Korea’s SK On ranked fifth with a 3.9 percent share.

Japan’s Panasonic ranked sixth with a 3.7 percent share, up two places from January-May. In January-May, Panasonic ranked eighth with a 2.9 percent share.

China’s Gotion High-tech, South Korea’s Samsung SDI, China’s Eve Energy, and Svolt Energy ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, with market shares of 3.6 percent, 3.2 percent, 2.7 percent, and 2.6 percent in January-June.

CATL’s share in June increased by 0.8 percentage points compared to May, while BYD’s decreased by 1.02 percentage points.
