Buick is a reputable car brand in the US and China known for the luxurious and advanced technology it provides drivers. While the brand may be struggling to find its place in America, amongst a sea of competition in the luxury car industry, it has taken off incredible in China. The newest futuristic concept model is blowing away the public with improvements like never before.
Buick’s popularity in the Chinese market
Despite being an American brand, many associate this car company with China, due to its great success in this nation. A few years ago, The New York Times actually wrote an article about Buick’s success in the Chinese market, noting that almost seems like a “Chinese brand.” How has this come about?
The brand was founded in the US over a century ago, before even its parent company General Motors, and became popular from the get-go. With a so called ‘golden era’ in the 1950s, the brand seemed like it was shooting for the stars with no sign of stopping. However, after this incredible performance, sales began steadily decreasing and their popularity declined. While things took a turn for the worse in America, the Chinese market boomed, with almost five times the sale of their Western counterpart.
To this day, Buick is a golden light in China, with each design more advanced and futuristic than the previous. The most recent concept is a clear indication of why China is reaching such great heights with this brand.
A new concept that is out of this world
Buick, under parent company GM, have unveiled their new Electra Orbit Sedan Concept in Shanghai, inspired by the theme of outer space. Talk about futuristic! Mixing historic Buick heritage with cosmic design, this model was developed by GM China’s Advanced Design Center and is truly a wonder to look at.
Stuart Norris, the Vice President of Design for GM China and GM International and Chief of Design at SAIC-GM, explains the concept:
“Electra Orbit is a bold exploration of what Buick can be when we blend heritage inspiration with visionary innovation. By reinterpreting space-age motifs and pushing electric-architecture freedoms, we wanted to create a concept that feels both familiar in its Buick DNA and thrillingly new.”
A closer look at the Electra Orbit
China is known for its incredible concept cars (check out this innovative model from Morris Garages here), and this Electra Orbit tops them all. The futuristic model reaches around 20 feet in length and seven feet in width, drawing inspiration from spacecraft, jets, and older iconic Buick concept cars throughout history. Its elegance is unparalleled, with a sleek and smooth body, 24-inch wheels, an elongated rear, and a metallic hue much like that of a spaceship. One of the most aerodynamic looking vehicles to ever come from the brand, this model really takes their space theme seriously.
Even the doors of this Electra are unique, exchanging normal hinge doors for those that push out and rotate, shining a quartet of lights upward at the same time. These lights play a central theme throughout, with a crystal ball like orb on the centre console and a planetary system dashboard display that moves across the vehicle. This holographic display of outer space is a splendid final touch to a concept of utter sophistication.
This concept vehicle forms part of a preview of what Buick and GM intend to offer in its future products. While we’ve seen other cars literally out in space, this one brings the cosmic theme down here to earth, that drivers may actually be able to use one day. Perhaps this success in China will kickstart more interest in the US, but for now, Buick remains much more successful in the east.
