As of the end of December 2025, China has 20.092 million electric vehicle charging facilities, making it the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network, a year-on-year increase of 49.7%. By the end of 2027, approximately million more charging facilities will be built to reach 28 million, providing over 300 million kilowatts of public charging capacity for more than 80 million electric vehicles, according to China’s National Energy Administration.

Specifically, in urban areas, the plan is to add 1.6 million DC charging connectors (including 100,000 high-power charging connectors).

On highway service areas (including rest areas), the plan is to install 40,000 new and upgraded ultra-fast charging connectors with a power output of 60 kW or higher.

By the end of 2027, the large-scale vehicle-to-grid (V2G) application pilot programs are targeted to expand to over 5,000 new bidirectional charging facilities. V2G allows the new energy vehicle (NEV) to both charge from and discharge electricity back to the grid.

For reference, currently there are 4.717 million public charging facilities in China, a year-on-year increase of 31.9%, with a total power of 220 million kilowatts, and an average power of 46.53 kilowatts. There are also 15.375 million private charging facilities, a year-on-year increase of 56.2%, with a total installed power capacity of 134 million kilovolt-amps.

In the last five years, the penetration rate of NEVs in China’s automotive industry increased by tenfold from 5.4% in 2020 to 54% in 2025. During the same period, NEV production increased from 1.37 million units to over 16 million units.

On the contrary, sales of gasoline-powered passenger cars in the Chinese market decreased from 18.17 million units in 2020 to 10.7 million units in 2025.

As the NEV penetration rate continues to increase, the demand for charging facilities is not only surging, but also with higher convenience expectation in terms of accessibility and speed.
