CATL (SHE: 300750) and BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) both saw declines in their market shares in China’s electric vehicle (EV) battery market last month, as smaller players saw growth.
In July, China’s power battery installation volume came in at 55.9 GWh, up 34.3 percent year-on-year but down 4.0 percent from June, according to data released today by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).
CATL’s battery installations in July totaled 23.11 GWh, maintaining its top position with a 41.40 percent market share, down 2.28 percentage points from 43.67 percent in June.
BYD’s battery installations in July stood at 11.83 GWh, accounting for 21.18 percent of the market share, ranking second despite a 0.29 percentage point decrease from June’s 21.47 percent.
CALB ranked third in July with a battery installation volume of 4.69 GWh, accounting for 8.40 percent of the market share, an increase of 0.84 percentage points from 7.55 percent in June.
Gotion High-tech ranked fourth in July with a battery installation volume of 2.70 GWh, accounting for 4.83 percent of the market share.
Eve Energy ranked fifth in July with 2.54 GWh and a 4.55 percent share.
China’s ternary lithium battery installations totaled 10.9 GWh in July, accounting for 19.6 percent of total installations. This was down 3.8 percent year-on-year, but up 1.9 percent from June.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries had an installation volume of 44.9 GWh in July, accounting for 80.4 percent of the total volume. This represents a year-on-year increase of 49.0 percent, but a decrease of 5.3 percent compared to June.
CATL, CALB, and Svolt Energy were the top three manufacturers of ternary batteries in July, with market shares of 69.59 percent, 9.43 percent, and 8.96 percent, respectively.
In the LFP battery market, CATL, BYD, and CALB had the highest shipment volumes in July, with market shares of 34.54 percent, 26.34 percent, and 8.15 percent, respectively.
China’s production of power batteries and other batteries in July was 133.8 GWh, up 44.3 percent year-on-year and up 3.6 percent month-on-month.
The production of ternary batteries in July was 29.5 GWh, up 26.4 percent year-on-year and up 0.1 percent month-on-month.
LFP battery production in July was 104.1 GWh, up 50.5 percent year-on-year and 4.6 percent month-on-month.
China exported 14.8 GWh of power batteries in July, of which ternary batteries accounted for 8.4 GWh and LFP batteries accounted for 6.2 GWh.
