It’s hard to tell what the best engine choice is when looking at the future of transportation. There is a wide selection of alternative fuels and power sources that are being tried and tested to discover what works as efficiently as petrol, without the giant carbon footprint. Some may say hydrogen is the next best thing, but this Chinese company begs to differ.
Hydrogen is not the next best thing, not even close
While a lot of reputable car manufacturing companies are turning to hydrogen in the energy transition, this alternative fuel is not completely harm-free. Yes, petrol and diesel produce dangerous gases when used in internal combustion, but if you do a little more research, you’ll find that hydrogen does the same.
The reason hydrogen is labelled as such a great sustainable fuel option is that, in theory, it produces only water vapour during combustion. However, if not produced sustainably, dangerous nitrogen oxides are released as well.
This, along with costlier production and a lack of infrastructure to store hydrogen, is making it a problematic route to take at the moment. But the future is promising, with a senior research scientist at MIT Energy Initiative stating:
“Nothing is going to change next year, or probably not in the next five years, but there are brighter pathways for hydrogen cars”
China is showing what the right answer is for now
Leaving hydrogen alone for the moment, Chinese automotive company BYD has impressed the public with its state-of-the-art sedan that uses electricity as its power source. Electric vehicles are a far better sustainable solution at the moment, due to their large popularity, lower operational costs, and better infrastructure.
The BYD Han L 4WD shocked customers with its incredible power output to rival even the strongest competitors. Reported as having the second-best electric motor in the world, the Han L 4WD is making history. Notable aspects of this sedan include:
- Horsepower of 1086
- maximum speed of 30,500 rpm
- acceleration to 100km/h in only 2.7 seconds
- measures in at more than 5 metres long
- 83.2 kWh LFP battery
With two electric motors, one at each axle, the Han L 4WD is pushing past the likes of Tesla and even V12 supercars like Ferrari and Lamborghini!
Part of BYD’s commitment to the future
The recent 4WD edition is only part of BYD’s Han L range, named after the Han Dynasty itself. This range is supported by LFP batteries and allows for dual-gun DC charging. This means that two chargers can be used at the same time, removing any issues dealing with long charging times. This range can charge from 16% to 100% in only 24 minutes—a huge feat for electric vehicles.
Both the interior and exterior of the BYD Han L range are designed with comfort and modernity in mind. 3D chrome plating lines the outside, and the stylish taillights are reportedly inspired by phoenix wings, a well-known symbol of growth and power. The interior is wider and longer than the previous models, giving additional space and comfort, and customers are treated to the latest intelligent driving system as well. A combination of sophistication and style, BYD’s latest sedan is benefiting both drivers and the environment alike.
China is just one of the countries that is moving past the idea of hydrogen fuel and focusing on more effective and desirable options like electrification. With lower fuel costs, government incentives, a greener environment and a smoother driving experience, it’s hard not to understand why BYD’s EV is so successful. The future holds exciting possibilities for the electric vehicle industry, and BYD seems to be among the top contenders right now.
