The BYD Yuan Max electric SUV was seen in China ahead of the official release. The spotted car was undergoing road tests in camouflage. The new model will sit between the Yuan Plus (Atto 3) and the Song Plus (Sealion 6) crossovers.

Yuan is a model line under BYD’s Dynasty series. It currently comprises two crossovers: Yuan Up and Yuan Plus. They sell globally as Atto 2 and Atto 3, respectively. Soon, the biggest model with the Yuan badge will enter the domestic market. It is the Yuan Max crossover.

On December 30, Autohome shared spy photos of the new BYD-branded crossover during road tests. It will reportedly be called Yuan Max. This model retains the distinguishing design DNA of the Dynasty series with elongated headlights in the front end. The car has a large trapeze-shaped air intake in the front.

The BYD Yuan Max aligns with the latest Chinese door handle policy by using handles with an adequate hand operation space and mechanical release functionality. Other highlights of this SUV include conventional side-view mirrors, roof racks, blind-spot monitoring cameras on the front fenders, and a slightly curved roofline.

There is no information about the BYD Yuan Max’s size. However, it will likely sit between the Atto 3 and the Sealion 6 in terms of size. We will remind you that the Atto 3 boasts a body length of 4,455 mm while the Sealion 6 is 4,775 mm long. There is also a slim chance the Yuan Max will get the third row of seats, as the spotted car offers some extra headroom, judging by an exterior photo.

It is worth noting that the Yuan Max is quite similar to the previously launched BYD Sealion 05 in terms of body outline. These crossovers share the same greenhouse. The Sealion 05’s dimensions are 4520/1860/1630 mm. There is a high chance the Yuan Max will become the sister model of the mentioned Sealion 05.

Interior and powertrain

Inside, the BYD Yuan Max has a new two-spoke double-D-shaped steering wheel with the Yuan (元) emblem on it. This name is a reference to one of the Chinese ruling dynasties. A gear shifter and a small LCD instrument panel hide behind the steering. The Yuan Max adopts BYD’s signature rotatable floating screen in the center console.

The car’s center tunnel has a roomy compartment, a wireless phone charging pad, a block of physical buttons, and two cup holders. The door cards of the Yuan Max have chrome-plated handles and upgraded materials.

The Yuan Max will most likely adopt the brand’s latest powertrain used for entry-level EVs, including the Sealion 05 EV. The latter adopts a 140 kW (188 hp) synchronous permanent magnet electric motor in the rear axle. It is powered by a 50 kWh LFP battery on board for 430 km under CLTC conditions. The more powerful variant of the Sealion 05 EV offers a peak power of 160 kW (215 hp). It has a 60.9 kWh battery for 520 km.
