BYD announced significant progress in expanding its national megawatt (MW) charging infrastructure during the “Megawatt Charging: 10,000-Charger Co-Construction” initiative launch ceremony at the 2025 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Auto Show. The company confirmed new partnerships with major charging operators Xiaoju Charging and Xindietu, aiming to build 10,000 units and 5,000 units of megawatt fast chargers, respectively.

These strategic collaborations mark a significant step in BYD’s efforts to accelerate the rollout of megawatt charging stations across China. The goal is integrating more social capital into infrastructure development and making ultra-fast charging widely accessible to electric vehicle (EV) users. In addition to co-building with partners, BYD had earlier committed to constructing 4,000 of its megawatt charging stations. As of today, more than 500 stations have been completed, covering over 200 major cities nationwide.

Xiaoju Charging, a competent charging operator under Didi, currently partners with over 8,400 businesses and serves over 34 million users. Xindietu, meanwhile, has integrated over 90% of public charging stations in China and operates in more than 400 cities. By working together, the three companies aim to form a more comprehensive and accessible megawatt charging network supporting highway and urban coverage.

The push to deploy megawatt-level charging infrastructure follows BYD’s March debut of the technology at the launch of its Han L and Tang L models, which support charging speeds that can deliver up to 400 km of range in just 5 minutes. The proprietary technology includes innovations such as a 1,000V/1,000A/1,000kW battery system and “smart voltage boosting” compatibility, allowing vehicles to charge across various public fast-charging platforms without compatibility issues.

The system also introduces dual-gun charging, which nearly doubles the power output and reduces charging time by 70% compared to current industry standards. Even using a single charging gun cuts the time by 45% compared to traditional fast charging, significantly improving user convenience.

The market response has been strong. Since their launch in April, the Han L and Tang L models have achieved first-month sales of 10,483 and 11,406 units, respectively, helping the Han and Tang family surpass 40,000 total deliveries in April alone. BYD attributes this strong performance partly to the appeal of its megawatt charging technology, which eases consumer concerns about charging times and accessibility.

BYD is actively discussing with other leading charging operators to expand its network further and maintain momentum. The company envisions a future where EV charging is as fast and convenient as refuelling a traditional gasoline car, setting a new benchmark for the electrification era.
