BYD’s best-selling car, Seagull, hit 1 million cumulative sales in the first week of June, according to insurance registrations monitored by China EV DataTracker. This includes domestic and overseas sales.
The all-electric hatchback launched in April 2023 and started deliveries in May 2023, meaning it reached the 1 million milestone in 25 months. The Seagull is responsible for nearly 13% of the BYD brand sales in China, China EV DataTracker shows.
Last month, BYD sold 60,131 units of Seagull, bringing its cumulative sales to 992,637 units, according to the data reported by BYD to the Shenzhen Exchange. According to weekly insurance registrations, Seagull sales surpassed 1 million units in the first week of June, China EV DataTracker data revealed.
BYD officially announced that Seagull sales are nearly 1 million during the BYD Seal 06 EV launch on June 6 in Chengdu, most likely referring to the cumulative sales as of the end of May.
Upon its launch in 2023, Seagull started at 73,800 yuan (10,270 USD). Two years later, the EV starts at 63,800 yuan (8,880 USD), showing how brutal the EV price is in China, even in the entry-level segment.
BYD Seagull offers up to 405 km range under CLTC conditions, thanks to a 38.9 kWh LFP blade battery and a 55 kW motor. It has one Nvidia Drive Orin N chip and basic ADAS, as BYD pushes to “democratise” assisted driving and make it a commodity.
Last month, on May 21, BYD Seagull launched in Europe under the Dolphin Surf name. The price starts at 19,990 EUR (23,000 USD), and the EV comes with a bigger battery, a more powerful motor, and a 210 mm longer length than the Chinese Seagull.
BYD Seagull sold 144,204 units in China in 2025 (January – May), up 8.7% from the same period last year.
