BYD Racco EV: China's Electric Kei Car Takes Aim at Japan | Price, Specs, & Range

First, the looks. It’s a shoebox designed with a ruler, a protractor, and absolutely no curves. The hood is so short you could rest your coffee on it without leaving the driver’s seat. The windshield stands tall and upright like a palace guard, and I’m pretty sure that a garden shed has a better aerodynamic profile than this EV. It’s got sliding doors, of course, because in Tokyo, opening a normal car door is a luxury akin to having a backyard.

BYD says the styling is «inspired by Japanese rivals.» This is a spectacularly polite way of saying it looks like they put a Mitsubishi EK and a Daihatsu Tanto in a blender and hit «puree.» But, to be fair, that’s the name of the game. When the rules are this tight, everyone ends up with a similar-looking shoebox. The Racco does try to get fancy with some C-shaped LED lights front and back, and it rides on 15-inch alloy wheels. On a car this small, those look like monster truck tires. It even has disc brakes on all four corners.
