BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has formally entered the Iraqi automotive market, despite having several models already available there.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker held a brand launch event in Baghdad, Iraq’s capital, on December 24 to announce its official entry into the country, according to an announcement today.
BYD introduced the Shark 6 in Iraq, a hybrid pickup known as the Shark in several other overseas markets. The model is not available in China’s domestic market.
Prior to the launch, BYD already offered seven models in Iraq, including three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and four battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
The official entry into Iraq represents a crucial step in BYD’s regional strategic layout, said Huang Zhixue, general manager of the company’s Middle East and Africa automotive sales division.
BYD is committed to establishing a comprehensive vehicle usage system in Iraq, with its after-sales service centers set to open soon, the company said.
Prior to the brand launch event, BYD opened its first showroom in Iraq, attracting over 2,000 visitors on its opening day, it said.
The BYD Shark was initially launched in Mexico in May 2024 and has since expanded to multiple markets including Brazil, Australia, Cambodia, Chile, and Pakistan.

BYD sold 480,186 NEVs in November, down 5.25 percent year-on-year but up 8.71 percent month-on-month, according to data released earlier this month.
The company exported a record 131,935 NEVs in November, a 325.91 percent increase year-on-year.
