BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) maintained its position as China’s largest new energy-vehicle (NEV) maker in July, despite a decline in market share.

The company sold 274,644 passenger NEVs in July, down 11.9 percent year-on-year and down 22.0 percent from, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) rankings released today.

BYD continued to lead with a 27.8 percent share in July, down from 31.7 percent in June and 35.5 percent in July 2024.

Tesla’s retail sales in China in July were 40,617 units, down 12.1 percent year-on-year and down 33.9 percent from June.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker ranked eighth in China’s NEV market in July with a 4.1 percent share, down four places from fourth in June.

This share was lower than its 5.5 percent in June and 5.3 percent in the same period last year.

Geely‘s NEV retail sales in July came in at 121,385 units, up 112.1 percent year-on-year and up 5.7 percent from June. It maintained its second-place ranking in NEV retail sales with a 12.3 percent share in July.

In China, NEVs include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.

BYD and Geely both produce BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla only produces BEVs.

Changan Automobile ranked third in China’s NEV market in July with 55,659 NEV retail sales and a 5.6 percent share.

In January-July, BYD ranked first in China’s NEV market with 1,884,686 retail sales and a 29.2 percent share.

Geely ranked second in China’s NEV market in January-July with 807,173 retail sales and a 12.5 percent share.

Changan ranked third in China’s NEV market in January-July with 423,180 NEV sales and a 6.6 percent share.

Tesla ranked fifth in China’s NEV market in January-July with 304,027 sales and a 4.7 percent share.

In the overall passenger vehicle market that includes traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, BYD ranked first in retail sales in July with a 14.9 percent share.

Geely ranked second in July with sales of 202,447 units and a 11.0 percent share.

FAW-Volkswagen ranked third with sales of 110,882 units and a 6.0 percent share.

BEVs sold 607,000 units in July, up 24.5 percent year-on-year; PHEVs, including EREVs, sold 380,000 units, down 4.04 percent year-on-year.
