BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) maintained its position as China’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker in August, while Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw its ranking improve.

BYD’s August passenger NEV retail sales totaled 310,200 units, down 18.3 percent year-on-year but up 12.9 percent month-on-month, according to rankings released Tuesday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The company maintained its top position with a 27.8 percent market share in August, unchanged from July but down from 37.0 percent in August 2024.

Tesla’s August retail sales in China came in at 57,152 units, down 9.9 percent year-on-year but up 40.7 percent month-on-month.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker ranked fifth in China’s NEV market in August with a 5.1 percent share, climbing three spots from eighth place in July.

This share was higher than its 4.1 percent in July but lower than the 6.2 percent recorded in the same period last year.

Geely Auto (HKG: 0175) had NEV retail sales of 134,405 units in August, marking an 81.4 percent year-on-year increase and a 10.7 percent rise from July. Its 12.1 percent market share in August maintained its second-place ranking in NEV retail sales.

In China, NEVs include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.

BYD and Geely produce both BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla only produces BEVs.

Changan Automobile ranked third in China’s NEV market in August with 72,338 NEV retail sales and a 6.5 percent share.

Xiaomi EV entered the top 10 NEV sales list for the first time, ranking 10th with 36,396 units sold and a 3.3 percent share.

This was driven by sustained strong deliveries of the SU7 electric sedan and increased production capacity for the YU7 electric SUV (sport utility vehicle), with 19,848 and 16,548 units delivered respectively in August.

From January to August, BYD led China’s NEV market with 2,194,886 retail sales and a 29.0 percent market share.

Geely ranked second in China’s NEV market during the same period with 941,578 retail sales and a 12.4 percent share.

Changan ranked third in China’s NEV market from January to August with 495,518 NEV sales and a 6.5 percent market share.

Tesla ranked fifth in China’s NEV market from January to August with 361,179 sales and a 4.8 percent market share.

In the overall passenger vehicle market including traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, BYD ranked first in retail sales in August with a 15.4 percent market share.

Geely ranked second in August with sales of 214,090 units and a 10.6 percent market share.

Changan ranked third with sales of 121,944 units and a 6.0 percent market share.

The Nio main brand recorded 2,530 insurance registrations last week, Onvo 2,650, and Firefly 1,090.
