BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) maintained its top position in China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market in 2025, while Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) ranked fifth, despite both experiencing sales declines.

BYD’s passenger NEV retail sales in 2025 came in at 3,484,525 units, down 6.3% year-on-year, according to rankings released Monday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The company maintained its top position in 2025 with a 27.2% market share, though this was lower than the 34.1% recorded in 2024.

Tesla had 625,698 retail sales in China in 2025, down 4.8% year-on-year.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker held a 4.9% share of China’s NEV market in 2025, ranking fifth.

In 2024, Tesla achieved 657,102 retail sales in China, securing third place in the NEV market with a 6.0% share.

Geely Auto (HKG: 0175, OTCMKTS: GELYF) recorded NEV retail sales of 1,564,562 units in 2025, an 81.3% year-on-year increase, securing second place with a 12.2% NEV market share.

Changan Automobile (SHE: 000625) recorded NEV retail sales of 789,141 units in 2025, a 26.8% year-on-year increase, securing third place with a 6.2% NEV market share.

Xiaomi EV saw EV retail sales of 411,837 units in 2025, a 200.9% year-on-year increase, ranking tenth with a 3.2% market share.

In the overall market including both NEVs and traditional gasoline vehicles, BYD ranked first in 2025 with a 14.7% share based on retail sales. The company only manufactures NEVs, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Geely recorded passenger vehicle retail sales of 2,605,565 units in 2025, a 46.9% year-on-year increase, securing second place in the overall market with an 11.0% share.

FAW-Volkswagen had retail sales of 1,531,276 units, a 4.8% year-on-year decrease, ranking third with a 6.4% market share.

In December alone, BYD’s passenger NEV retail sales totaled 339,854 units, securing first place with a 25.4% market share.

Geely’s December passenger NEV retail sales totaled 135,989 units, ranking second in the NEV market with a 10.2% share.

Tesla’s December retail sales in China were 93,843 units, securing third place with a 7.0% market share.

Xiaomi EV recorded December retail sales of 50,212 units, ranking ninth with a 3.8% market share.

Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866) ranked tenth with 47,385 retail sales in December, holding a 3.5% market share.

BYD’s full-year 2025 BEV sales reached 2,256,714 units, surpassing Tesla’s 1,636,129 units for the first time.
