Global Green Hydrogen Policy: China, A Giant Biding Its Time

China is the biggest hydrogen producer and consumer in the world though most of its hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels or derived from industrial processes. Joseph Dellatte, Resident Research Fellow for Climate, Energy and Environment at Institut Montaigne’s Asia Program, analyzes the role hydrogen will play in decarbonizing China’s economy. He argues that despite China's immense industrial capabilities, and gigantic investments in renewable energy capacities, the country still lacks a comprehensive green hydrogen policy that would enable broader decarbonization efforts.
