Leaders in Brussels are trying to curb China’s dominance in the industry, but European automakers fear the taxes will drive up prices and lead to a trade war.

EU Tariffs: "It goes against the principles of market economy and international trade rules, undermines China-EU economic and trade cooperation as well as the stability of the global automobile production and supply chain," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said.

The European Union has hiked tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China in a move likely to infuriate Beijing and rattle Chinese automakers, which view the bloc as a vital and growing market.

Chinese automaker BYD continued its dominance in the Brazilian electric vehicle (EV) market in May, securing an impressive 71.4 percent market share, according to data released by Fenabrave, the Brazilian vehicle distribution federation.
