This week, BYD continued its push into South America, where it is the clear EV leader, with a model introduction in one of the most laggard countries, Argentina. The company launched the BYD Atto 2 DM-i there.

Yes, it is a plugin hybrid, but it does have about 110 km (70 miles) of electric range on a full charge (WLTP). In a country that has barely adopted any BEVs so far, it is clear BYD thinks it best at the moment to offer the mixed powertrain.

“By seamlessly combining electric performance with high-efficiency hybrid power, BYD ATTO 2 DM-i sets a new benchmark for efficiency, versatility, and sustainable mobility in Argentina,” BYD writes.

BYD hosted 130+ special guests for the launch event in Buenos Aires, “including close to 100 journalists and influencers.” The company noted on social media (the only place it announced this in English) that “BYD Argentina marked a new chapter in the country’s transition to electrified mobility. Following its recognition as the top-selling brand in pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Argentina in 2025, BYD strengthens its presence with a plug-in hybrid SUV powered by advanced DM-i Super Hybrid technology, created to expand access to new energy vehicles.”

Will this help Argentina to shoot up the Latin American EV sales charts? Hopefully! Considering the country’s starting point, one would think it has to provide a significant boost.
