Man becomes first person in Australia to own China’s cheapest EV and he already has a lot of thoughts after seeing it

A man who was one of the very first people in Australia to get his hands on China’s cheapest EV, the BYD Atto 1 Premium, has shared his thoughts on his new car.

The Atto 1 Premium, which is known as the Seagull in some other markets, is the cheapest EV you can buy in Australia.

The Atto 1 Essential comes with a starting price tag of just $23,990AUD – around USD $16,865.

YouTuber CarSauce was one of the first people in Australia to get his hands on one and has shared his honest opinion, as well as revealing how much he actually ended up paying.

The BYD Atto 1 is the cheapest EV in Australia

In a bid to be the first in Aussie to get his hands on the BYD Atto 1, the YouTuber decided to pre-order it directly from the marque’s website.

He was able to choose between the Essential, which has a maximum output of 65kW and around 136 miles of range, or the more powerful Premium, which offers up to 115kW and around 192 miles of range.

The YouTuber opted for Premium and chose the Sprout Green ‘hero color’ for the exterior.

The YouTuber said he was probably the first person in Australia to get the BYD Atto 1 Premium with the specifications he did.

The EV was secured with a $1,000AUD deposit, and almost three months later, it was ready to be picked up.

After arriving at the dealership, he whipped back the cover and revealed his new EV and shared his first thoughts.

“First impressions, it looks so good,” he said.

Before adding that the car looked better than the BYD Atto 1 he had driven in China, as it had a redesigned bumper and was finished in that eye-catching shade of green.

“It just looks a lot more aggressive here to be honest,” he added.

He was equally as impressed by the interior of the Atto 1 Premium, which comes with power-assisted seats and a smart-looking infotainment system.

He was also pleasantly surprised by how roomy the Atto 1 was inside.

Although it comes with a low price tag, the YouTuber was shocked by the price

The standard BYD Atto 1 Essential has a starting price of 23,990AUD – around $16,865US, while the Atto Premium starts at $27,990AUD, about $18,618.

When the YouTuber put his order in for the BYD Atto 1, he had no idea how much it was going to cost him.

And although it’s hailed as the cheapest EV in the country, he was left a little surprised by how much it ended up costing.

In total, he parted with $31,204AUD, equivalent to around $21,025, which was more than he’d thought it’d be.

“So, actually, it was more expensive than I expected,” he said.

“And not by a little margin.”

However, he spent around $3,200AUD, about $2,224US, on extras, including that Sprout Green paintwork.

But despite it costing more than he might have guessed, overall, he seemed pretty delighted with the purchase.
