According to new unofficial reports from China, BYD is working on a second-generation megawatt DC fast-charging system (also known as Flash Charging), which could deliver a power output of 1,500 kW (1.5 MW).
The original Flash Charging debuted in March 2025 alongside BYD’s Super e-Platform, offering 1,000 kW (1 MW) of charging capability via two GB/T plugs simultaneously. It enabled the first two models (Han L and Tang L) to charge at up to a 10C rate and replenish up to 250 miles (400 km) of CLTC range in 5 minutes.
1,500 kW Charging
According to CarNewsChina.com, the second-generation Flash Charging can handle a current of up to 1,500 amps, which at up to 1,000 volts means it could deliver a peak power of up to 1,500 kW.
The images in the source article show a new T-shaped dual-plug charging dispenser. As we understand it, the limitations of liquid-cooled GB/T connectors require using two plugs simultaneously to achieve full power. This requirement must also be addressed on the EV side.
The article mentions that battery energy storage at the 1.5-MW charging stations will double in capacity, which seems reasonable, as high power surges would negatively impact the grid. The capacity is high enough to support more than 20 consecutive charging cycles.
The report is unofficial and unconfirmed. Increasing peak power output at the infrastructure level is one thing, but accepting it at the EV level is another. Whether it’s possible for some EV models, and more importantly, viable, we will see.
Flash Charging Rollout
The article says that as of late 2025, BYD installed more than 500 megawatt charging stations across 200+ cities in China.
Let’s recall that BYD initially outlined a plan to install 500 units (the first batch of 4,000 total). Later, the company announced a plan to install 15,000 additional megawatt chargers (together with its partners, Xiaoju Charging and LongShine).
More recently, we heard about 1,000-kW DC fast-charging coming to Europe, but as far as we know, it has not yet materialized. Separately, BYD plans to bring megawatt charging to South Africa.
