BYD’s European registrations surge 270% in 2025 while Tesla slips 27%

• BYD achieved over 200% year-on-year growth in Europe during most months of 2025, whereas Tesla saw declines in every single month.
• In December 2025, BYD’s registrations in Europe reached 27,678 units, marking a 229.7% year-on-year increase.

The latest European vehicle registration figures reveal how BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) performed differently in a major market during 2025.

BYD’s new vehicle registrations in Europe reached 187,657 units in 2025, a 268.6% increase from 50,912 units in 2024, according to data released today by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

This data covers the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom (EU + EFTA + UK).

By contrast, Tesla’s new vehicle registrations in Europe came in at a higher 238,656 units in 2025, yet this represents a 26.9% decline from 2024’s 326,525 units.

BYD achieved year-on-year growth exceeding 200% in most months of 2025, while Tesla saw declines in every month.

In December 2025, BYD registered 27,678 vehicles in Europe, a 229.7% increase from 8,395 units in the same month of 2024. Its market share reached 2.4%, up from 0.8% in December 2024.

Tesla registered 35,280 vehicles in Europe in December, a 20.2% decrease from 44,190 units in the same month of 2024. Its market share stood at 3.0%, down from 4.1% in December 2024.

Within the EU, BYD’s registrations reached 128,827 units in 2025, marking a 227.8% increase from 39,303 units in the same period of 2024.

Tesla’s registrations in the EU totaled 150,504 units in 2025, a 37.9% decrease from 242,436 units in the same period of 2024.

In December, BYD’s EU registrations totaled 18,008 units, a 167.1% increase from 6,741 units in December 2024. Its market share reached 1.9%, up from 0.7% in December 2024.

Tesla’s EU registrations in December totaled 21,485 units, down 31.9% from 31,567 units in December 2024. Its market share stood at 2.2%, down from 3.5% in December 2024.

Globally, BYD’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales reached 2,256,714 units in 2025, surpassing Tesla’s 1,636,129 units for the first time, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

BYD’s BEV sales in 2025 grew by 27.86% compared to 2024, while Tesla’s declined by 8.56%.

BYD also produces plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), while Tesla only manufactures BEVs.

BYD targets 1.3 million overseas vehicle sales in 2026, representing about 24% growth.
