BYD reaches 15 millionth NEV production milestone

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has rolled off its 15 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), marking a key milestone for the Chinese NEV maker.

The company announced the achievement today on Weibo, saying the milestone vehicle is the N8L SUV (sport utility vehicle) from its Denza sub-brand, also the 15,000th unit of this model.

The N8L is a large six-seat plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) targeting the family car market, emphasizing safety, comfort, and agile handling.

Launched on October 28 with a starting price of RMB 299,800 ($42,570), it represents one of BYD Group’s premium models.

The milestone of 15 million NEVs came 13 months after BYD reached its 10 millionth unit.

From January to November this year, BYD sold 4,182,038 vehicles, marking an 11.30 percent year-on-year increase, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Founded in February 1995, BYD has grown into one of China’s largest automakers, employing over 900,000 people with nearly 110,000 dedicated to R&D.

BYD built its foundation in the battery business before formally entering the automotive industry in 2003, when it acquired Qinchuan in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, northwest China.

The company produced its first NEV model in December 2008 and saw its one-millionth NEV roll off the production line in May 2021, becoming China’s first automaker to reach this milestone in the NEV sector.

With rapid growth in NEV sales, BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, shifting its focus to manufacturing PHEV and BEV models.

On November 18, 2024, BYD announced the rollout of its 10 millionth NEV — a Denza Z9 sedan.

The company is advancing overseas production, with its 14 millionth NEV rolling off the assembly line at its Brazilian plant in October.

BYD chairman said sales decline stems from its technology lead not being as strong as in previous years, with major technological releases coming soon.
