
BYD (HKG: 1211) maintained its position as China’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker in November, while Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) returned to the top 10.
BYD’s passenger NEV retail sales came in at 306,561 units in November, down 26.5 percent year-on-year but up 3.6 percent month-on-month, according to a ranking released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The company maintained its top position with a 23.2 percent market share in November, up from 23.1 percent in October but down from 32.9 percent in the same period last year.
Tesla recorded 73,145 retail sales in China in November, a 5 percent year-on-year decline despite an 181.3 percent increase from October.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker reappeared in China’s top 10 NEV retailers, ranking fifth.
Its share of China’s NEV market in November was 5.5 percent, up from 2.03 percent in October, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Tesla’s October retail sales in China were 26,006 units, the lowest since November 2022. This caused it to fall out of the top 10 in the CPCA monthly NEV retail sales rankings for October — marking Tesla’s first absence from the list since August 2022.
Geely Auto (HKG: 0175) recorded NEV retail sales of 172,169 units in November, a 42.4 percent year-on-year increase and a 4.8 percent rise from October.
Its 13.0 percent market share in November maintained its second-place ranking in NEV retail sales, up from 12.8 percent in October.
Both BYD and Geely produce battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), while Tesla only manufactures BEVs.
SAIC-GM-Wuling ranked third in China’s NEV market in November with 96,194 NEV retail sales and a 7.3 percent market share.
Xiaomi EV ranked 10th in China’s NEV retail sales top 10 list for November, securing a 3.5 percent share with 46,249 units sold.
Like Tesla, Xiaomi EV’s current models — the SU7 sedan series and YU7 SUV (sport utility vehicle) — are all BEVs.
From January to November, BYD led China’s NEV market with 3,144,671 retail sales and a 27.4 percent market share.

Geely ranked second in China’s NEV market during the same period with 1,428,573 NEV retail sales and a 12.5 percent market share.
Changan ranked third in China’s NEV market from January to November with 727,511 NEV sales and a 6.3 percent market share.
Tesla ranked fifth in China’s NEV market from January to November with 531,855 sales and a 4.6 percent market share.
In the overall passenger vehicle market including traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, BYD ranked first in retail sales in November with a 13.8 percent market share.
Geely ranked second in November with 268,337 units sold and a 12.1 percent market share.
FAW-Volkswagen ranked third with 137,500 units sold and a 6.2 percent market share.
