Tesla Launches New Model Y Performance in Canada, Model S/X in China

Tesla is refreshing its product lineup across multiple markets, following the recent release of updated versions of its four main vehicle models.

Last month, the company launched more affordable, Standard trims of its Model Y in both its domestic market and in Europe, with production having now started across the two blocs. A Model 3 Standard is also available in the US.

At the same time, the Performance version of the refreshed Model Y, which launched in early 2025, was released in Europe and extended to the United States in late September — launching there just hours before the deadline of the EV tax credit.

Model Y in Canada

Starting Thursday, customers in Canada can now order the high-end version of the crossover.

The Performance trim is priced from C$74,990, equivalent to $53,170.

According to the company’s website, deliveries are expected to begin in March 2026.

Up until now, the company only offered the Long Range All Wheel Drive (AWD) iteration in the country, priced from C$64,990 ($46,200).

Customers ordering the entry-level version are expected to receive it between December and January.

Tariff Effects

The pricing on the vehicle was previously trimmed in mid-July, as the country dealt with the pressure from the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration.

High rates have driven Tesla Canada to begin importing Model Ys from the company’s European plant, rather than from the United States, for the first time ever.

This is not, however, the first time that Canadians have received vehicles produced outside of North America.

According to a Reuters report in mid-2023, Tesla had briefly imported Model Ys from China’s Giga Shanghai.

The Model Y is a best-seller in China, with its popularity boosted by the July launch of the six-seater Model Y L.

As of Friday, both the five-seat Model Y and six-seat Model Y L are sold out for 2025.

Customers now face a waiting period of 4 to 8 weeks for the Rear-Wheel Drive or six-seat trims, and up to 13 weeks for the Long Range versions. Only a few Model Y units remain available as inventory.

Model S and X in China

US tariffs on China have caused Tesla China to suspend orders for the flagship Model S and Model X in April.

These two models are only produced in the United States. The Giga Shanghai manufactures both the Model 3 and Model Y, and the Berlin plant only the Model Y.

Since then, the company has relied solely on inventory units, which have sold out months ago.

In mid-June, Tesla launched updated versions of its Model S and Model X vehicles in the United States, with improved range, a quieter cabin and better suspension.

They were released in Canada a month later and have only recently started being included in European portfolios.

After nearly seven months, Tesla China has introduced the new Model X and the new Model S in China.

However, these “brand new cars” are only available as existing inventory.

The luxury sedan, with a 715 km CLTC range, is priced from 855,900 yuan ($120,400), while the SUV, with a range of 700 km, starts at 882,900 yuan ($124,200).

For comparison, the Model S is priced from $94,990 in the US and the Model X begins at $99,990.
