Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) recorded its lowest retail sales in China in three years last month, primarily driven by a domestic decline in the Model Y and a significant surge in exports of the SUV (sport utility vehicle).

Model Y retail sales in China came in at 19,488 units in October, the lowest since March this year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This represents a 46.17 percent decrease from the 36,204 units sold in the same period last year and a 61.92 percent drop from September’s 51,173 units.

Meanwhile, Model Y exports from China reached 19,074 units in October, the second-highest figure this year after August’s 19,475 units.

This represents a 214.70 percent year-on-year increase and a 118.39 percent rise from September.

The Model 3 recorded retail sales of 6,518 units in China in October, marking a 52.25 percent year-on-year increase and ending five consecutive months of year-on-year declines, though sales fell 67.97 percent from September.

Model 3 exports from China totaled 16,417 units in October, down 24.46 percent year-on-year but up 55.57 percent from September.

Tesla operates a factory in Shanghai producing the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y, serving both domestic deliveries and export operations.

The US EV maker’s retail sales in China were 26,006 units in October, the lowest since November 2022, according to data released yesterday by the CPCA.

From January to October, Tesla’s retail sales in China totaled 458,710 units, down 8.38 percent year-on-year.

Model Y retail sales in China from January to October totaled 312,331 units, a 16.46 percent year-on-year decrease; Model 3 sales during the same period totaled 146,379 units, up 15.41 percent year-on-year.

From January to October, 104,898 Model Y vehicles were exported from China, a 41.26 percent increase year-on-year.

During the same period, Model 3 exports totaled 104,253 units, a 38.35 percent decrease year-on-year.

The new Model Y variant starts at RMB 288,500 ($40,500) and boasts an 821-km CLTC range, with estimated delivery times of 2-4 weeks.
