BYD refers to its plug-in hybrids as DM-i, standing for “Dual Mode-intelligent”. With the Atto 2 DM-i, the Chinese manufacturer aims, according to its own statements, to “redefine” the compact SUV segment. The Atto 2 as a plug-in hybrid is expected to achieve a purely electric range of up to 90 kilometres – “a performance unmatched in this class,” BYD says.
However, the manufacturer has not yet disclosed how the Atto 2 DM-i achieves these figures. Apart from the 90-kilometre electric range, the brief statement on the new variant mentions only a combined total range of up to 1,020 kilometres, without providing performance data for the powertrain or details on the battery and its charging capabilities. It is only known that the two announced PHEV SUV variants will differ in battery size – so the 90-kilometre range does not apply to all plug-in hybrid versions of the model.
There are a few other details: “The car will feature subtle design tweaks to set it apart from pure-electric versions of the Atto 2. These changes include a larger middle front grille, decorative lower elements in the front bumper, the removal of the side vents in the front wings and resigned badging on the tailgate,” the statement says. In addition, a new exterior colour called “Midnight Blue” will be available exclusively for the plug-in hybrid. The dimensions of the 4.31-metre-long vehicle remain unchanged.
Further information could be released soon: the BYD Atto 2 DM-i will make its European debut this week at the Fleet Europe Days in Luxembourg, before being “introduced to the media in November,” according to the company. Pre-sales are expected to start shortly afterwards, with first deliveries planned for the first quarter of 2026.
BYD has not yet provided pricing for the Atto 2 DM-i. The fully electric variant with a 45.1 kWh battery and 312 WLTP kilometres is listed in Germany from €31,990. The larger battery version with more than 60 kWh of energy is priced at €38,990 in the brochure.
