The world’s largest BEV manufacturer, BYD, will kick off car sales in Japanese Aeon shopping malls. It aims to establish car sales with a price of approximately 2 million yen (13,180 USD) in 30 commercial facilities across Japan. It is quite common in China to open car sales spots in supermarkets.
According to the IT Home report, BYD aims to increase its Japanese sales volume by expanding its retail sales network in collaboration with the Aeon Group. We would remind you that this company was founded in 1969 as one of the largest retail chains in Japan. It is also well-known for Jusco supermarkets. Aeon operates over a thousand stores worldwide, with the majority situated in Japan.

The report says that Aeon will establish sales outlets in commercial facilities near BYD stores. The retail chain will independently set prices and implement promotional activities. It was reported that the upcoming discount strategy will allow customers to purchase the car at approximately 2 million yen (13,180 USD). The cheapest BYD car available in Japan at the moment is the Dolphin hatchback, priced at 2,992,000 yen (19,720 USD).
Car buyers at Aeon stores will earn points in the retail chain’s electronic currency “Waon” and receive discounts on the cost of installing a charger at home. This strategy can potentially change the local car distribution structure as BYD’s sales in Japan are growing. Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA) reported that BYD accounted for 20% of Japan’s imported EV sales in September.
It is worth noting that Aeon is actively developing the car charging infrastructure domestically. In early 2025, the company reported it had around 2,500 chargers in 374 stores across Japan. They allow users of BEV and PHEV models to charge their cars while shopping.
